Blue Wing Rye Whiskey was made in St. Louis from the 1880s up until 1920. Charles Henry Wittenberg was the founder of C. H. Wittenberg Distilling Company the owner of the Blue Wing Rye Whiskey brand.
The C.H. Wittenberg Distilling Company once was one of the largest whiskey distilleries in Saint Louis, MO. Before Prohibition, there were about 15 distillers in St. Louis. Unfortunately, like most liquor manufacturers, the death knell for them occurred with the start of Prohibition in 1920. None in St. Louis started back in business after Prohibition ended, and so it was with the C.H. Wittenberg Distilling Company and the Blue Wing brand.
Today, I am pleased to advise that, 100+ years after the Volstead Act put C.H. Wittenberg Distilling Co. out of business, we are back in business!
C. H. Wittenberg’s descendants have recreated the flavor and quality of this St. Louis spirit that was put out business by Prohibition. As we say on the bottle, enjoy one of the treasures of St. Louis’ past, today.

Blue Wing Rye Whiskey is now available at the Missouri Athletic Club downtown location! Look for it next to the Maker’s Mark. More locations to follow.
The Blue Wing brand was easily recognizable as their advertising items almost always featured a well depicted blue wing duck. Today collectors can find Blue Wing advertising items from the pre-Prohibition era on tin serving trays, etched whiskey shot glasses, and lithographs such as the ones featured here.
